Devin pricing: what an ACU actually measures

Devin pricing meters an Agent Compute Unit, and the useful thing about it is how precisely Cognition documents what does and does not consume one. Enterprise accounts draw ACUs against a contracted volume. Self-serve accounts spend an included quota first, then prepaid on-demand credits. The mechanics underneath are identical, and they are more transparent than the unit's name suggests.

Key takeaways

  • Self-serve plans run Free, Pro at $20, Max at $200 and Teams from $80 a month.

  • Teams charges $40 per full seat while flex seats are free, so most of a team can cost nothing until they work.

  • Windows sessions consume roughly 9% more usage than the same work on Linux.

  • Devin does not consume usage while sleeping, waiting for your reply, or waiting for a test suite.

What Devin actually meters

An ACU measures the work Devin performs in a session, not the time you have it open. Cognition lists two components: the number and complexity of actions Devin takes, covering planning, context gathering, task execution, browser actions and code execution, plus virtual machine time and network bandwidth, which it describes as typically a small fraction of the total.

The exclusions are the part worth knowing, because they are unusually generous:

  • Waiting for your response costs nothing

  • Waiting for a test suite to run costs nothing

  • Setting up and cloning repositories costs nothing

  • A sleeping session costs nothing, and Devin sleeps automatically after 30 minutes of inactivity

Enterprise customers can move that sleep timeout anywhere between 5 and 120 minutes.

One quirk deserves a line of its own. Windows sessions consume approximately 9% more usage than equivalent Linux sessions. Very few vendors publish an operating-system surcharge at all, let alone quantify it.

What Cognition does not publish is the conversion rate: how many ACUs a given piece of work costs, or what one ACU costs in dollars on self-serve. The mechanics are documented, the exchange rate is not.

How credits and quotas work

Self-serve and Enterprise run the same meter through different wrappers. Enterprise draws ACUs against the volume on its order form. Self-serve spends the plan's included quota first, then prepaid on-demand credits.

Pro carries both a daily and a weekly quota. Max removes the daily cap and raises the weekly one, which is the actual difference between a $20 plan and a $200 one.

Teams is the interesting structure. Every member holds either a full seat at $40 a month, which includes a Pro-equivalent quota and Devin Desktop, or a flex seat, which is free. There is no limit on flex seats beyond the 200-member cap, and flex members draw on on-demand credits shared across the whole team. A team can therefore put everyone on Devin and pay only for the people who actually use it.

Enterprise admins can cap each member's monthly consumption through usage policies.

What happens when you hit the limit

Work continues on credits. Past the included quota, self-serve accounts draw prepaid on-demand credits, and Enterprise accounts keep consuming against their contracted volume.

Devin bills at the end of the billing cycle, or whenever usage exceeds $2,000, whichever comes first. That threshold is a real control: it caps how much unbilled usage can accumulate before Cognition collects.

Enterprises consuming ACUs without an active billing schedule now see a warning, added in June 2026 to stop usage running ahead of payment coverage.

Flexprice’s Take

Devin documents the boundaries of its billable unit better than it documents the unit's price.

Devin's exclusion list is the best thing here. A sleeping session, a running test suite and a repository clone cost nothing, which removes the anxiety that makes people use an agent less than they should. The 9% Windows surcharge is a detail most vendors bury.

You still can't price a task. Cognition tells you exactly what consumes an ACU and never what an ACU costs or how many a typical job burns, so choosing between $20 Pro and $200 Max is guesswork until you've run a month.

The free flex seat deserves copying. It kills the seat-count negotiation entirely and prices Devin on use: everyone gets access, and you pay for the people who actually work.

Best For

Teams with a few heavy users and a long tail of occasional ones.

Watch Out For

Anyone who needs to forecast spend before running a pilot.
